Description The desire of users to inhabit on a serene, vast and tree-filled landscape, where nature is able to show its greatness, has led them to identify a place in the Ricaurte sector in Cuenca-Ecuador, an almost intact site that In the mornings, a characteristic mist of the mountains of the area is shed, which floats over the sloping territory, guiding the gaze towards the treetops, mountains and clouds. Working with the natural slope of the site allows us to observe the architecture as a landscape and the buildings as its mountains, we generate an artificial territory one landscape within another to obtain a new geography that rises to move between the treetops, building geography more what architecture. House with Niches is a modern two-story house located in Strzelce Opolskie, Poland, designed in 2018 by RS+ Robert Skitek . Description The building was built on a fairly large, flat plot of land in yet undeveloped area. The neighborhood, however, becomes denser quickly. The composition of building consists of several white, elongated boxes shifted against each other. They include not only rooms, but also open voids. The resulting niches, mostly finished with wood, create intimate, partially covered terraces. Thanks to this solution, it was possible to resign from external shading blinds and rooms aren’t exposed to overheating during the summer thanks to recessed windows. In one of the niche the entrance zone with a carport is hidden. The others accompany the living quarters. On the ground floor they open up to the day zone, the office and senior room. Open Shut House is a modern two-story house located in Kooyong, Australia, designed in 2020 by Wala . Description The original period building is one if a pair of semi-detached dwellings, with Art-Deco stylings reflecting its Inter-war era. The building sits on a long and narrow allotment 10m wide and 60m deep with a rearward slope falling 4.2m. The site also backs onto a cricket ground and the Monash Freeway beyond, with northerly winds carrying the sound of traffic to the rear of the property. The owners’ family had outgrown the original building and their brief called for an extension that could be future-proofed and cater to the changing needs of individual family members, particularly their 4 young adult children. The design response had to expand on the functional offerings of the old house as well as ensure that any new addition respected the heritage character and scale of the period home, whilst being a clearly distinguishable yet connected entity. House in the Hudson Valley is a modern stone house located in the state of New York, designed in 2019 by Alexander Gorlin Architects . Description Nestled in the woods just below the crest of a hill overlooking a mountain lake in the Hudson River valley, this house is designed to blend into its natural landscape of boulders and rock outcroppings. Clad in a local granite of salmon and gray, with a green roof, sustainable mahogany windows with non-reflective glass, from a distance, the house dissolves into its surroundings. Arriving up a winding driveway to preserve a number of mature groves of native trees, the house in section is set into a natural rock shelf into the cliff. This allows for an L- shaped plan that wraps around an internal rock garden, and entry into the level of living spaces; kitchen, dining and living areas. Robinson Rd House is a lovely New-England style home located in Hawthorn, Australia, redesigned and extended in 2021 by Chan Architecture . Description This project was a modern rear extension to a New-England style home characterised by a high pitched slate roof, dormer windows and red clinker brickwork. The brief was to renovate and repurpose the existing rooms and façade and to add a new open planned kitchen/dining/living room and master bedroom at the rear as well as create a better connection to the backyard. The main challenge of this project was how to add new modern spaces to the existing house whilst maintaining the charm and character of the original period home. This was done by incorporating architectural elements into both new and old parts of the house, such as steel framed doors and windows, herringbone timber flooring and soft window furnishings.
