Description The Harry House is a family home that proves that efficiency can be generous and joyful. The clients, a family of five, wanted to extend their weatherboard home in Coburg. They didn’t want to just add extra space for the sake of it, they were inspired by a period of living in Japan, so spatial efficiency was a focus. We took time to understand how they currently lived as a family, with three young boys, while also considering their future, to ensure that the house will support their needs as they changed with time. After a thorough analysis of the site, we proposed a discrete two-storey addition to preserve space in the backyard for the garden. For our clients, the project signified a profound moment of change in their lives, marking their retirement from respective architectural careers and a relocation from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula. They wanted a home that would facilitate a new chapter that prioritised both their connection and independence. Practically speaking, they wanted two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the capacity to work from home, ample shelving for their extensive design library and beautiful spaces to showcase their art collection. With one of the clients being a UK expat, prior to COVID, they expected family and friends to regularly visit, so it was important to include an area that would provide guests with a sense of their own space where they could comfortably stay for an extended period of time. House 109 is a stunning two-story residence located in Vagos, Portugal, designed in 2022 by Maria João Fradinho . Description This single-family house is implanted on a land confronted with one of the longest arteries in the city, which gives its name to the project: the national road EN109. Since it is designed for residential use, the architectural piece is materialized in a uniform body which, through its shape and arrangement, protects itself from the busy road. The villa has the main facade perpendicular to the layout of the road, contrasting the pre-existing reality. Thus, the front facade becomes blind, with a green space of transition and protection being created between it and the road, which allows greater privacy to the house area, that is properly protected from the EN109.
